Polyester Fiber: The “Invisible Guardian” of Asphalt Road Surfaces
In the construction of modern roads, the durability and stability of asphalt pavement have always been the core of the project. And polyester fiber, this seemingly insignificant material, has become an indispensable “invisible guardian” in asphalt mixtures due to its unique physical and chemical properties.
The disordered distribution structure of polyester fibers is like weaving a fine “protective net” in the asphalt. When the road surface experiences stress due to temperature changes or load effects, these fibers can effectively prevent the emergence and expansion of cracks, thereby enhancing the crack resistance of the road surface from the source. Its huge specific surface area is another significant advantage. It is like countless tiny “oil-absorbing sponges”, which can fully absorb the oil in the asphalt, significantly increasing the viscosity and adhesion of the asphalt, making the bonding between aggregates and asphalt more tight, and reducing diseases such as looseness and peeling.
In high-temperature environments, asphalt is prone to softening and flowing, causing problems such as rutting and bulging on the road surface. However, the high-temperature stability of polyester fibers is extremely strong. They can firmly “lock” the fluidity of asphalt under high-temperature conditions, like putting on a “heat insulation protective suit” for the asphalt, effectively inhibiting high-temperature deformation. At the same time, the addition of fibers further increases the viscosity of the asphalt mixture and enhances the bonding force between the components, ensuring that the road surface remains stable under high-temperature and heavy-load conditions.
In the presence of low-temperature conditions, asphalt tends to become brittle and crack. However, the high modulus value and strong extensibility of the polyester fiber play a crucial role. It can withstand the contraction stress under low temperatures and buffers the stress concentration through its own extensibility, effectively preventing the occurrence of low-temperature brittle cracking on the road surface and ensuring that the road remains intact under severe cold conditions.
From urban roads to expressways, from airport runways to bridge surface coatings, polyester fibers, with their comprehensive properties of “resisting cracking, increasing adhesion, resisting high temperatures, and preventing low temperatures”, provide long-lasting and reliable protection for asphalt pavements. It not only extends the service life of the pavement, reduces maintenance costs, but also, through technological means, firmly establishes the foundation for the safety and durability of transportation infrastructure.
